Facebook API: Clarification if clarification were needed???..

It seems like a lot of developers are getting tetchy fingers before using the Facebook API now and rightly so. In a blog post from Justin Osofsky (Facebook’s director of platform and parter operations)

For a much smaller number of apps that are using Facebook to either replicate our functionality or bootstrap their growth in a way that creates little value for people on Facebook, such as not providing users an easy way to share back to Facebook, we???ve had policies against this that we are further clarifying today (see I.10).

Startups take note, previous warnings and policies were largely unpoliced to get the user numbers up in the early days.  Now it’s about maintaining the user base (perhaps a better name is “advertising eyeballs”) and ensuring the that revenue from such services isn’t spread about across the big social media players.

What I believed would take six months to get interesting has basically happened in the space of three weeks. Bootstrapping startups in 2013 the advice is quite clear, make your own data and if you have to rely on others then be ready for shifting sands and a backup plan.
